Historical Background and Folklore
The walnut was introduced into England from its native Iran by the Romans. As an offering to the Roman goddess of fruit trees, the Romans would bury a coin beneath a walnut tree. In addition to its edible nuts, walnut oil is used in cooking. Archaeologists have found that black walnuts were a popular food with Roman people.

Walnut wood has been used extensively for furniture. Wood from the black walnut is one of the most expensive in the world. Because of its resistance to decay it was widely used for waterwheels before the industrial revolution.

Black walnut leaves produce a herbicide that prevents a number of other plants from growing too close. In the competition for resources this herbicide also inhibits walnut seedlings from growing too close to their parent trees.

The butternut walnut gets its name from the practice of boiling the nuts to collect the oil that rose to the top, which was used in place of butter. Syrup was made from the boiled down sap.
