Historical
Background and Folklore
Scotch pine is the only pine that is native to Britain; white pine
was introduced in 1705. Besides the oak, pines are the most wide-ranging
and successful trees in North America, and are one of the most important
timber trees in the world for a wide range of commercial uses. In
addition to lumber, they also yield turpentine, tar and pitch. Pine
rosin has been especially important for violinists and other musicians
to “wax” their bows.
The ancient Romans had a practice similar to present-day Christmas
tree decorating: On the night before a major holiday, such as Saturnalia,
a pine tree from a sacred grove would be cut down by priests and
taken into the temple and decorated. To the Romans, pine symbolized
the powers of male fertility. |
On New Year’s Eve in the Alsace region of France, a pine tree
was decorated and the girls of the village would dance around it a
la Maypole fashion.
