Historical Background and Folklore
Maple is a common tree that has not made its way into folklore or legend. It produces a valuable hardwood that has been popular for furniture and carvings because of its beautiful grain. Maple acquired the nickname whistlewood because the outer bark is easy to peel off the tree and the source for wooden whistles. It is associated with moose because they find the young shoots of maple delectable.

Highly prized maple syrup is produced by sugar maples in New England. The canyon maple in the western United States has a sweet sap that is also used for making syrup. Colonial settlers in New England used the unprocessed sap as a tonic.

As the year draws to a close, it is the maple that provides a brilliant blaze of color that rival spring’s vibrant palette.
