Historical
Background and Folklore
The magnolia was named for Pierre Magnol (1638-1715) who was head
of the botanical gardens in Montpellier, France. This distinctive,
tropical-looking ornamental tree was cultivated in China for its
buds, which was used to flavor food and medicines. Tea made from
the bark of the cucumber magnolia was used in place of quinine to
treat malaria. Wood from the cucumber magnolia is used for interiors,
cabinets and ornamental boxes.
There are approximately 80 species worldwide, eight of which are
native to North America. Although it is a tree that epitomizes the
American south, magnolia adorns lawns and graces avenues from eastern
Massachusetts to Florida and west to eastern Texas. In its northern
reaches it is deciduous but in the south it’s an evergreen. |
