Historical Background and Folklore
Unlike most other flowers, the honeysuckle’s scent is stronger at night as it relies on moths for pollination. Essential oil made from honeysuckle is used for incense and massage. In aromatherapy, honeysuckle is applied to situations where prosperity or psyche awareness is sought.

Medicinally it has been used for coughs, asthma and inflammation. Some varieties are a natural antibiotic and have been used to treat infections. A poultice of honeysuckle relieves skin rashes, especially one caused by poison oak. As a source of salicylic acid, honeysuckle was once used in the making of aspirin.

Honeysuckle is a climbing plant that wraps around anything it encounters, and is popularly used to provide privacy. It is a hardy and does well in the garden as well as in the wild, which has caused problems. Some varieties imported into the United States have become invasive pests, especially for pine trees. While splotches of bright color can look festive in an evergreen, these aggressive climbers can eventually choke a tree to death.
