Historical Background and Folklore
Over a thousand species of bamboo have been identified and more are being discovered. “Gregarious flowering” or synchrony is an unusual behavior of bamboo in which a particular species will come into bloom at the same time even if they have not bloomed for decades. Some species flower only once in a hundred years. Species range in size from one foot to over 100 feet tall. Bamboo was among the first plants to reappear after the atomic bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

The ancient Chinese believed that to study bamboo and master its lessons was time well spent. In 3rd and 4th century, there was a group of neo-Daoists known as the Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove. Bamboo is still a symbol of nobility, virtue and respectability.
