Historical
Background and Folklore
Apples are one of the oldest cultivated fruits and have a long association
with magic, the faery realm and the Isle of Avalon. The apple’s
connection with illumination is portrayed in The Bible in the story
of the Garden of Eden, as well as the game of bobbing for apples
where the winner is blessed with the power of foresight.
In many folktales, a wand made of apple wood opens the path to the
faery realm for the person who wealds it. Legends tell of wanderers
in apple groves meeting the queen of the faery realm and being invited
to accompany her there. |
Apple flowers have been a symbol of beauty, love, happiness and youth.
Providing sweet sustenance for the winter, the apple harvest marked
a time of plenty for celebrating and sharing.
