Samhain
is a time when the veil between the worlds is thin and magic is
strong. It is a time to reflect on those who have gone ahead to
the Otherworld: family, friends, ancestors, and even pets.
This
can be done to honor and celebrate the lives of your ancestors and
others who have passed beyond the veil. Prepare ahead of time cord,
yarn or string cut to a minimum of 12 inches. Yarn works well and
comes in every color imaginable. If you are honoring one person,
cut three lengths, or for multiple people, cut one for each. Also
have with you a piece of candy.

After
casting your circle and invoking the directions and the Divine,
say the name(s) of your loved one(s) aloud and light an extra candle.
Hold in your mind the memories of those you’ve named. Think
of how they have touched your life. Very slowly twine the strands
of yarn together. You can braid them or simply knot them together.
Tie at least three knots. If you want to use more knots do them
in multiples of three.
As
you work you may want to sing or chant. Work your love into the
yarn. When you have finished, hold the yarn between your palms and
send your energy out to the universe. Your loved ones will receive
it and feel your warmth. Before ending your ritual, place the yarn
on your altar with a piece of candy. This will carry your intention
to sweeten their paths through the Otherworld and into the next
life. Blessed be.
